Springfield Cyclocross 2012

CYCC once again played host to the Springfield Round of the Elmys Cycles Eastern Area Cyclocross League on Sunday 16/9.  As ever, a huge thank you to members young and old who turned out to offer help and support making this once again a hugely successful event.  The venue once again was the sports fields at the end of Arun Close, a largely open area, requiring some 300 stakes and 4km of tape to mark out the course.  Work on this started just after 06:00 with the course being ready for inspection by the British Cycling Commissaire and practice laps.  Meanwhile, back in the club house, Kathy Steward was busy setting up the kitchen  area ready to sell cakes etc and Mark, Lorna & Andrew Rose were busy setting up the sign on desk ready to take the entry fees.  Once again, Steve & Karen Murphy & Ian & Cheryl Salmon installed themselves near the start / finish line as the official lap counters in time for the first race at 11:00.
CYCC had entrants in two races the U12, and the Youth with Jordan somehow managing to race in both (don’t ask!).   Olly Ford & William Smith represented the club in this race over a shortened circuit of the adult course coming in 11th and 21st respectively in a large field of 46.

The club was represented by Jordan Beighton, Harvey Jennings, Jamie Murphy & Alex Salmon in the Youth race which took place over the full adult course, taking in the infamous flights of stairs.  Mark Wyer from British cycling was kind enough to bring a trailer load of cyclocross bikes for our members to use, certainly a lot faster and easier to carry than the mountain bikes  they have used  in previous years, many thanks Mark!  Alex Salmon got off to a flying start and managed to dig deep into his reserves to keep ahead of his club mates coming in 14th overall.

The Senior / Junior / Elite veteran race saw a breakaway group of three consisting of Hayden Wood, Tim Guy & Sean Dunlea make an early break from the field.  The three managed to stay out in front with Hayden wood managing to break free during the final lap.
In all, 247 riders took place in the event making it a huge success for the club.  Thanks again to everyone who helped make Springfield the race to be at.
