Whilst the club was riding in Danbury on Saturday, Jordan was riding for the club in the Malvern Hills at this years Mountain Mayhem event held in the grounds of Eastnor Castle.
Mountain Mayhem is a 24 hr endurance race which has grown into what could be described as a family friendly cycling festival going on around the main race all weekend.
Jordan lined up on the start line, before the midday start of the main race, in a U16 race of 8 laps around the start finish straight and arena area. With some strong competition Jordan managed to get a third in the overall race, which was then split into age catagories in which he was first in the 12 & under catagory, a great start to the weekend!
Jordan on course.
The start, who forgot to change?
The main race starts at midday Saturday with solo riders and nominated team members making a Le Mans style running start over 1.5 miles after which bikes are collected on the first lap ensues. Mayhem is one of the few races where with approx 2500 riders, there is a true mix of pro team riders through to weekend riders giving it a go. This year, each lap was 11 miles (according to my odo) and approx 400m of vertical climb. Teams can change riders as they wish in the pit area after each completed lap, solo riders do not have that luxury
Louisa Beighton (Jordans Aunt) riding at dusk with lights at the ready.
Extended "Team Beighton" was riding in the Mixed Sport catagory in which mixed sex teams of five ride. I was joined by my two brothers, sister in law and cousin. Between us we rode solidly for the 24 hrs completing 14 laps in some sticky and wet conditions. We were however put somewhat in the shade by catagory winners Revolution Bikes who completed 25 laps. For me, even more impressive was Solo Male winner Anthony White who completed an amazing 21 laps alone. In the Expert catagory, Hope narrowly beat the Scott team, both of whom completed 29 laps.
Other events going on included a 1.5 hour race for 16 - & 17 year olds and a 100km road ride on the Saturday.
